Details of the attempted assassination on Imam Khamenei on June 27, 1981

On June 27, 1981, a bomb attack was carried out against Ali Khamenei at the Abuzar Mosque in Tehran, Iran. At the time, Khamenei was a presidential candidate and a close aide to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Here are the details of the assassination attempt:

The Attack: While Khamenei was giving a speech and answering questions from attendees, a young man placed a tape recorder on a desk in front of him. About a minute later, the device started to make a whistling sound and then exploded.

The Perpetrators: The attack was attributed to the Mojahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), also known as the People’s Mujahedin Organization of Iran. Clerics at the mosque reported that a message was found on the inner wall of the two-piece tape recorder that read, “A gift from the Forqan Group to the Islamic Republic.” The Forqan Group was an Iranian militant organization.

Injuries: The explosion severely injured Khamenei. He suffered damage to his arm, vocal cords, and lungs. His right arm was left permanently paralyzed.

Aftermath: The assassination attempt was part of a larger period of political violence and turmoil in Iran following the 1979 Revolution. Just one day later, a massive bombing at the headquarters of the Islamic Republican Party killed at least 74 people, an attack also attributed to the MEK. Despite his grave injuries, Khamenei survived and, in September 1981, was elected President of Iran.
